In Depth LA Getaway House Experience Review+Discount

It’s kind of an interesting how we ended up booking Getaway house. My childhood dog had passed away in October, and obviously I was very sad at the time. My sweet husband literally said, “Aw, we should treat Acorn (our golden retriever)”, and remembering a previous Getaway Instagram ad, booked 2 nights in December 2019 to just unplug and spend time with our little family.

So WHat is it?

If I could sum up what Getaway houses are, just think: Tiny dog-friendly homes x glamping in nature. Getaway has planted these tiny cabins all over the country, their philosophy to help people unplug from life, our phones, distractions and just literally get. Away. And slow down. My husband and I really enjoyed this experience, and I got a lot of questions over IG, so I figured I’d write an in-depth review.

Booking:

I’d say booking is pretty easy to navigate on their website, sort of like Googleflights. Just click the city and dates you’re looking to stay in, how many adults and/or kids, yes/no to pets (which is an extra $40 flat fee), and book! Note there are two types of cabins, one with one queen bed (for 2), and one with a queen bunk (for 4), and the cool thing is…both are the same price! We didn’t know this upon booking, so we just picked the 1 bed cabin.

Regarding pricing: Their prices are pretty straightforward as they show them up front in a calendar like this: (Obviously the pricing varies from city to city)

Practical Stuff (ameneties/storage/cleanliness):

Surpringly this tiny home really did have everything we needed- even olive oil to my surprise. One tip is that we were very glad we had ice chests because they’re bigger than what the mini fridge can hold, and we brought down a lot of food for all our meals. Another good idea is bringing a gas stove if you have one. It’s not a must have, but for us, the more stoves the better to make cooking move along faster. But here’s what they include in every Getaway cabin:

Storage-wise even with overpacking and taking along a 75lb Golden Retriever+her stuff we were able to store everything just fine. There’s space under the bench near the bed to hold 2 ice chests, room along the top shelf of the kitchen, and (though a little one) a small table to keep other random stuff. There are a couple of hooks along the wall near the door which served useful for dog leashes, coats, and towels. Don’t forget if you really did bring too much, there’s always the car!

If you’re worried about cleanliness because these Getaway homes allow dogs, in our experience everything was very clean upon arrival! If I didn’t know they allowed dogs, I wouldn’t even have been able to notice.

Thoughts:

The first thing I want to note was that everything really was intentional and prepared for everything, even down to the details.

  • The cabins are a good distance apart, and your window is never facing another cabin’s window only nature, therefore decreasing the likelihood for awkwardness.

  • No driving around aimlessly trying to find your cabin. All the signs are easy to see and very clear, making it easy to find the name of your cabin and parking.

  • When you check in, they give you a little portfolio including a pamphlet of a map of hiking trails and ideas of things to do to unplug and enjoy your stay (ex. star gazing, making roasted chestnuts, playing card games…etc). Such a practical touch!

  • The big window is AWESOME and very aesthetic obviously. Just know that there’s shades that you can pull down for privacy or if you’re scared creepers will be spying on you while you sleep.

  • What if I need help? In case of emergencies or not-so-emergency situations in our case (we ran out of foil) we still had access by phone to staff on site, and they were able to answer any questions and, in our case, grab us some extra foil.

Review:

My husband and I loved our experience so much that we’ve already booked another 2- night stay. It’s just a nice way to get away from the city and be in nature with our dog without driving too far (1.5 hr drive from us). Getaway provides a lot of useful information prior to your stay so you know what to expect, and everything looked and smelled clean and new. And surprisingly, even though we overpacked like we often do especially with food, there was enough storage in the cabin for our 2 ice boxes, clothes, and doggie stuff. I do recommend staying for at least 2 nights as 1 night is probably not enough since you check in around 3pm and check out at 11.

The only cons that I could think of on this trip was

1. No hot showers. I like scalding hot showers, and I never got one. What’s unexpected is that sometimes you might have to be prepared to take lukewarm/cold showers, in case other people are using up all the hot water depending on the time of day.

Save Some $:

If you want a slight discount I do have a code that you can apply upon checkout. Use WORTHIT for $25 off. From what I’ve seen so far, they do have deals every now and then, the most recent one being $100 off your $400 (or something) booking for Black Friday but it doesn’t seem like they do deals often so unless you’re willing to wait, I wouldn’t count on it. Also, if you enroll in their Getaway Often Program, you get one night free for every 7 nights you stay. Might as well if you do plan to go every now and then! It’s a great idea for family/friend gatherings.
