Glossier Balm Dot Com-Retail $12

You've all probably heard of this product before. This was one of Glossier's OG products and cult-favorites that serve as an all-purpose lip and skin balm. The balm dot com comes in a variety of flavors and tints, however the formulas are the same. I've used these quite a bit, so here's what I think. Right off the bat I'm going to have to say that I disagree with almost every youtuber out there on whether or not I think this is a hit product.

Specs:

  • Size: 0.15 fl oz/15 mL
  • Applicator: None
  • Shades: 3 clear, 1 shimmer, 2 tinted
  • Flavors: Original, birthday, cherry, rose mint, Coconut
  • hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, paraben free, cruelty free

Ingredients:

Petrolatum, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Beeswax, Lanolin, Flavor, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Theobroma Grandiflorum Seed Butter, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, Menthol, Sodium Saccharin

Performance

I bought the mint and coconut balmdotcoms. I kept one in my car and one in my bag for easy access. The balms did moisturize my lips for a good hour or so because of the product's thickness, but my gripes with it were that

  1. It was just a more easy-to-carry and flavored Vaseline .
  2. The tube didn't provide an applicator. The product is dispensed, and the user has to use his/her finger to apply it, which is less hygienic and isn't as easy to use.

Of the 2 flavors I purchased, I liked the mint one more. The mint had a cooling and refreshing feel (which some people might not be a fan of), but while some youtubers say the coconut flavor smells just like coconut, I completely disagree. It definitely didn't smell like natural coconut or coconut oil, but at the same time it wasn't perfume-y. So that flavor wasn't horrible, but just not my favorite. Between the two flavors, the textures were exactly the same.

Verdict

Not a bad product, but for $12, this is completely not worth the price (even if you get free shipping). There are quite a few comparable cheap options out there such as Aquaphor or Vaseline for less than $5 and work just the same way. Since lip balm is a heavily-used product, you'll have to find something more affordable/worth it to keep repurchasing.

If you're looking for a nicer holy-grail lip balm, I recommend Kiehls Lip Balm #1 ($7) or the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm with SPF 25 (more product for $7.50!) You could get almost 2 of these for the price of one balmdotcom!
