Glossier Generation G Lipstick-Retail $18

I feel like I'm probably the last one out there to write a review about this. 2 years ago when I first heard about this product, it was nothing but good reviews, so since I had some Glossier credit in my account, I went ahead and purchased it. First, I got the shade Cake, then sold it and bought the shade Like (pictured here). I ended up selling the Cake shade, not because it was a bad product, but because it was so close to my lip color that it didn't look like much (which I didn't mind), and I just didn't reach for it often. Glossier offers the Generation G matte lipstick in 6 sheer shades, and here I have the one in "Like".

Performance:

Let me begin by just saying that this is supposed to be a sheer, matte lipstick. Usually matte lipsticks are advertised to be highly pigmented and long-lasting, so if that's what you're looking for, this definitely isn't it. For me, however, it's my jam! I pretty much only purchase sheer lip products. I know. Boring.

The packaging is a minimalistic white tube with GLOSSIER. on the front. When applied, it definitely provides a very sheer tint to the lips that's very easy, buildable and no fuss. You don't need a mirror, and you can just use it like you would your favorite lip balm. The color is indeed buildable, but only to a certain point. You definitely can't build it up to an ultra-pigmented lipstick if that's what you want. What makes this unique is that it's still able to be moisturizing but at the same time matte. It doesn't necessarily hydrate my lips, but it does keep it from drying out. Phew, no need to worry about flaking or lipstick accentuating lip lines. The texture is very smooth (which makes sense because there's a good amount of dimethicone, a type of silicone) and soft, making it comfortable compared to other matte products out there. As you wear it over time, you will need to reapply over and over again if you want the color throughout the day, but this is no problem since it feels just like lip balm.

Verdict:

If you're looking for a comfortable, sheer matte lipstick, you'll like this. It's easy to apply and doens't dry out your lips. Since there aren't many lip products like this on the market that's clean, so I'd say it's worth the $18 if this is precisely what you want in a lipstick. Otherwise, for $18 this product is overly-hyped and would be too expensive in my opinion, and I'd suggest you spend a couple more bucks on a YSL or higher end lipstick that has better staying power.
