Performance:

The discussion between chemical vs. physical sunscreen is widely debated and not something we’ll get into. I personally gravitate toward physical sunscreens because they are less irritating for sensitive skin types and I feel more comfortable with the way physical sunscreens work (in simplistic terms, physical sunscreens reflect the sun’s rays contrasted with chemical, which absorb the rays and break them down.) There are pros and cons to chemical vs physical too, where physical sunscreens can often be too thick and cause a white-cast so that you look like you’re from Memoirs of Geisha or something. Ok, a little over-exaggerated but you know what I mean. On top of the skincare benefits that this sunscreen gives, here’s a little bit more on the UV filters:

Let me say first and foremost that the Klairs UV Essence sunscreen uses a different ingredient as a chemical filter than most chemical sunscreens we’re used to. Usually, you’ll find the words Avobenzone and/or homosalate/octinoxiate/oxybenzone or the like. But this product uses the ingredients below both having an EWG of 1, making it safe for sensitive skin types.

- Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (wow that’s LONG) as a chemical filter to absorb UVA rays.

-Ethylhexyl Triazone a UV filter.

Amazing right? And it’s SPF 50++++! What does this mean? SPF refers to UVB protection (check!) As for UVA, the Korean rating system uses + to indicate UVA protection. (From 1-4 (+), the more, the better and this has ++++!)

And the next best thing is that this gel-cream formula really is weightless and invisible like it says it is, never leaving a white cast and never feeling greasy or heavy on the skin. Yet, at the same time, it won’t dry out the skin. The ingredients in here are all rated 1 on EWG except for 2 ingredients, having an EWG rating of 2. That’s REALLY impressive. It’s definitely something that I’ve been using everyday, by itself or under another physical sunscreen for extra protection. I cannot recommend this enough and while I knew Kbeauty was always more superior in making effective sunscreens without making the consumer dread putting on sunscreen…dear, Klairs has really outdone themselves with this ingredient list (see above plus the breakdown) and formulation! This is rare, but I can’t find anything that I don’t like about this product! I definitely will be repurchasing this again.

Most days, I’m good about applying sunscreen (this definitely wasn’t always the case. I used to hate sunscreen!), even layering this Klairs one underneath the physical sunscreen. But on those days where I’m running late for work or want to be out the door ASAP, I tend to gravitate toward this product since I don’t need a mirror and is just a joy to use.

Verdict:

Yes! I really think this would be awesome for anyone who has sensitive skin and has yet to find a lightweight SPF they can use everyday. Because honestly, no matter if it’s physical or chemical, the best kind of sunscreen is the one that you’ll actually use every. single. day to protect your skin from the sun. (especially in the desert of Socal!)
